The J9 Domestic Abuse Initiative

  • What is the J9 Initiative

The J9 Domestic Abuse Initiative raises awareness of domestic abuse and helps survivors access support safely. We train professionals and community members to recognise the signs of abuse and respond effectively.

Once trained, organisations display the J9 logo, showing survivors that they’ve found a safe place where they can access information and use a telephone to contact support services.

Many survivors tell us they never had the chance to reach out because it wasn’t safe. It’s not always easy to know who to contact, where to go, or what options are available. Coercive control is a common feature of abusive relationships, and perpetrators often work to block survivors from accessing support. J9 helps break down those barriers by creating a network of safe places where survivors can speak out and get help.

The Government consultation Transforming the Response to Domestic Abuse highlighted Safer Places’ J9 initiative as an example of good practice.

The J9 Domestic Abuse Initiative is named in memory of Janine Mundy, a mother of two who was killed by her estranged husband while he was on police bail. Janine often signed her text messages “J9,” which inspired the name. The initiative was started by her family and the local police in Camborne, Cornwall, where she lived.

  • J9 Training

More Positive Me CIC is the provider of J9 training in Devon. The programme is designed to raise awareness and increase knowledge and understanding of domestic abuse among staff in public and voluntary sector organisations, as well as community members who work with the public.

The training ensures that learners and their organisation are equipped to respond appropriately and effectively to survivors of abuse, helping more survivors access the support they need.

  • How does J9 Work?

Once delegates have completed J9 training, they display the J9 logo — for example, as a sticker on their office door, a lanyard, a badge, or a digital logo on websites and social media.

The J9 logo lets survivors know they’ve found a safe place where they can access information and use a telephone to contact support services.

Participants also receive a domestic abuse information pack, which helps them signpost survivors to specialist organisations offering additional support. The pack contains essential guidance to help survivors understand their rights and access the help they need.

  • The J9 Network

The J9 Network is a community-wide network of organisations and individuals who have completed J9 domestic abuse training. Wherever the J9 logo is displayed — on a door, lanyard, badge, website, or social media — survivors know they’ve found a safe place where they can access information and use a telephone to contact support services.

By training professionals, community members, and organisations, the J9 Network creates safer spaces across local communities, breaking down barriers to support. With access to information packs and signposting to specialist services, the network ensures that more survivors can be heard, know their rights, and reach the help they need.
